Green Crafts for Children: 35 Step-by-Step Projects Using Natural, Recycled, And Found Materials

Kids love to make their own toys and games, gifts and ornaments. It encourages them to give full rein to their creative flair - and if they can use component parts that are adapted or recycled, so much the better for them and the planet! None of the projects in this book use any special materials. Instead, they all rely on ingredients that you are likely to have in the cupboard or items that can be found around the house or garden, or out on walks in the park or at the beach. Recipes for salt dough are included, as well as methods for easy felting, together with step-by-step instructions on what to make, such as pretend sweets, boxes and masks. Old gift wrapping paper, old clothes and odd buttons and beads can all be used in an imaginative way, as can pine cones, tree bark, shells and other fascinating natural bits and bobs. Gifts for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends are here, together with games and toys that can be made and then played with again and again. From painted stones and a friendship bracelet to a simple dolls' house and a driftwood boat, children will love the projects in this engaging book. In fact, kids need never be bored again.

And One Day Turned Into a Thousand

And One Day Turned Into a Thousand

It all started with a single day. That day was three years ago today, I set out on my biggest adventure yet. I had my tiny car packed as full as possible and one of my best friends in the passenger seat next to me. The drive started out filled with tearful goodbyes and an excitement fueled rush of adrenaline. We headed across the plains with the drum of thunder and the patter of millions of raindrops hitting my car. I looked in the rear view mirror hoping to keep sight on home for as long as possible. The rains stopped and the sun began to set as we crossed into the dry deserts of New Mexico.

At some point I looked to my right and asked Michelle to tell me I was crazy, to grab the steering wheel from me and whip us into a U-turn headed for home. She looked at me with her calm, reassuring smile and said "This is awesome" and other affirmations like "you're not crazy, you're doing the right thing." I smiled in agreement but deep in my heart there was still the angst of leaving everyone and everything I loved to head into a city where I was nonexistent, had no home, no job, and less than a handful of friends.

We drove all night through the giant expanse, the sky lit up like glitter blown on black velvet, by the millions of stars shining down and guiding our path. I rolled down the windows to let the fresh desert air whip through my hair wildly--it kept my eyes open and focused on the journey. My head was heavy with "what if" and "what am I going to do." I remember pulling over to grab 45 minutes of sleep at a tourist stop and waking to the fiery glow of sunlight cast across the Arizona desert as the sun crept over the mountains on the distant horizon. You'll never see such a beautiful or more peaceful thing than this. I remember thanking God in those moments for the excitement that was happening in my life. I remember feeling peace and knowing this was good.

Early that day we pulled out of the desert and into the mountains which lie on the outskirts of the city that would be my new home. I took a deep breath. I was there. It was time to take this challenge on full force. One day at a time, because that's all I could do. I had no plans. I had no goal. I just had to keep moving--to do something.

In the last 3 years I've learned a thing or one hundred. The primary lesson I learned being the pain of solitude and loneliness, and how to use it to give me strength and independence. I had never really been alone before coming to Los Angeles. I had never been without friends, dates, and a slew of family members within my reach every day. This was different and terrifying to me. If one could count the times I sat on my bed, eyes red and swollen with hot sticky tears, asking myself why I had done this--why had I left everyone I loved to pursue these dreams I'd had since I was young, it would be an incredible feat. My mother often sat at the other end of the phone line telling me "You can't give up now, I really feel like this is where you are supposed to be, just hang in there one more day," and I would. I would hang in there one more day and get a gig to carry me just far enough to the next. Just enough hope to know I was taken care of, I was provided for, I was given just what I needed. My bank account was empty, my heart was tired. There wasn't much I could do other than say a prayer and take on another day. I did. Then, another day turned into over 1,000 more days.

I'm not sure how one day turned into over one thousand. I've never been more scared, stressed, exhausted, drained, or felt weaker than I have in the time I have been here. This has actually been a good thing because it's in our weakness that we discover where our true strength lies. I feel like I succeeded, not by my own merit, but by the merit of the source from where my strength comes.

In one thousand days, I learned the beauty of many different kinds of folks. I've never been surrounded my a more diverse, talented, incredible group of people. I will miss every single one of them more than I can convey, not just for what they gave to me, but for what they taught me to give to others. My work family is invaluable. They carried me on, just one more day.

In one thousand days, I learned what really matters in life, what success is actually of value. I've achieved more than I thought possible and had experiences I will never forget. I've met many of my heroes, I've been a part of things I hope I can tell my kids and grandchildren someday. My heart cannot express the gratitude that is overflowing for the excitement and blessings I have experienced. These made it feel worth it, these carried me on just one more day.

In one thousand days, I laughed even through the hardest times, while living with the most rambunctious, intelligent, and generous group of guys and gals. I forgot my fears, I forgot my sadness, because of their friendship. They made me smile, they carried me on jus

The third generation, patterned after Chevrolet's "Mako Shark II" (designed by Larry Shinoda), started in 1968 and ended in 1982. This generation has the distinction of being introduced to the motoring public in an unorthodox — and unintended — fashion. 1968 marked the introduction of Mattel's now-famous Hot Wheels line of 1/64-scale die cast toy cars. General Motors had tried their best to keep the appearance of the upcoming car a secret, but the release of the Hot Wheels line several weeks before the Corvette's unveiling had a certain version of particular interest to Corvette fans: the "Custom Corvette", a GM-authorized model of the 1968 Corvette.
In 1969, the 350 in? (5.7 L) engine became available in the Corvette, and in 1970, the 427 big block was enlarged to 454 in? (7.4 L). Power peaked in the 1970 and 1971 models, with the 1970 LT-1 small block putting out 370 hp (276 kW) and the 1971 454 big block having its last year of big power with 425 hp (317 kW). In 1972, GM moved to the SAE Net measurement for power (away from the previous SAE Gross standard), which resulted in lower values expressed in HP. Along with the move to unleaded fuel, emission controls, and catalytic converters, power continued to decline and bottomed out in 1975 — the base ZQ3 engine put out 165 hp (123 kW), and the optional L82 engine put out 205 hp (153 kW). Power remained fairly steady for the rest of the C3 generation, ending in 1982 with the 200 hp (149 kW) L83 engine.
Styling changed subtly over the generation. Minor trim changes occurred through the 1972 model. In 1973, the Corvette dropped the front chrome bumpers for a urethane-compound "5 mph" bumper but kept the rear chrome bumpers. In 1974, the rear chrome bumpers became urethane as well, resulting in the first ever chrome-less production Corvette. 1975 saw the last year for the convertible, which did not return until 1986. In 1968 the "Sting Ray" name was not used, but returned in 1969 as a single word "Stingray" until 1976, the last year in which the name was used. In 1977, Dave McLellan succeeded Zora Duntov as the Corvette's Chief Engineer. 1978 saw a 25th "Silver Anniversary" edition, the first Corvette Indy Pace Car, the introduction of a "fast back" glass rear window, and the highest production number until the C-5. In 1980, the Corvette got an integrated aerodynamic redesign that resulted in a significant reduction in drag. In 1982, an opening rear hatch was offered for the first time on the Corvette available on the Collectors Edition model only. A new engine featuring cross fire injection, a fuel injection carburator hybrid, was also introduced that year as the L83. It was the only engine available in 1982, and was not offered with a manual transmission.

James Buchanan & Co Ltd

James Buchanan & Co Ltd

IN THIS JET-AGE CENTURY fortunes are made at the turn of a wheel, lost at the drop of a share index, men become millionaires in a year and great businesses mushroom up from nothing in a matter of months.

Yet the twentieth century tycoon has by no means created a precedent or established a monopoly on the romance of a quick fortune and the creation of a business empire. Many staid Victorians did something very much like It.. . . a little more unobtrusively, perhaps, but with a vigour and relentless opportunism which has earned the Un-dying admiration of those who followed them.

The tall, distinguished young Scotsman who rather dourly began a business career in 1879 as London agent for a well-known firm in the whisky trade, might have remained just that. If he hadn’t realised that at that time London and indeed the rest of England was an untapped market for bottled Scotch whisky.

Whiskies available to Londoners then were chiefly Irish and ‘self’ whiskies heavy Highland and Lowland malts brought in casks from individual Scottish distillers.

He chose his blend well, and bottled it under the name ‘Buchanan Blend.’ It is no exaggeration to say that ‘Buchanan Blend’ changed the picture of the entire Scotch Whisky trade. Each distillery produced whisky of a different character and flavour, but with ‘Buchanan Blend’ came a bottled Scotch which could be absolutely relied on for consistency and quality.

All Buchanan had set out to do was to capture a reasonable proportion of the London spirit trade. He ended up by making Scotch Whisky a universal drink. From his foresight and shrewd judgment the taste for Scotch of a known proprietary brand evolved at a tremendous rate. Then came his second stroke of luck - He marketed ‘Buchanan Blend’ in a black bottle, with a neat white label.

For a short spell, the actual name changed: to ‘Buchanan’s House of Commons’ Scotch Whisky,’ commemorating Buchanan’s first notable step on the road to success. . . . a contract to supply, against keen competition, the House of Commons with whisky. This was in 1885, not so long after Buchanan started in business.

But despite the name change, the bottle was still black, the label still white. And this was how Buchanan hit the jackpot.

For the people of England, in general, didn’t ask for the Buchanan Brand by name - They merely said: ‘Have you got any of that black and white whisky?’

Without knowing it, the public had created one of the most famous and enduring spirit brand names in the world: ‘Black and White’ Whisky.

But James Buchanan had other ideas. He saw the potentiality for a blend ‘sufficiently light and old to please the palate of the (English) user,’ to quote his own words.

Buchanan quickly realised the publicity potential of the new brand name, and just as quickly adopted it.

It was a shrewd move.. . . within a remarkably short time, ‘Black and White’ backed up later by the trademark of a Black Scots terrier and a White West Highland terrier, became famous from end to end of the world.

He advertised widely, in trains and on the sides of buses as well as in newspapers and smart magazines. And he was not afraid to spend money on advertising.

In 1889 Buchanans were awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition in open competition for blended Scotch, and in 1895 Buchanan started his own export business. He toured extensively, not only in Europe, but in Canada, the U.S.A., South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, getting new business all the time.

Buchanan actually founded the firm in 1884 at 61 Basinghall Street, London, E.C. and, by arrangement, stocks of both bulk and bottled whisky were mainly drawn from W. P. Lowrie and Company, Glasgow and other Glasgow Blenders.

Very soon, however, Buchanan found it necessary to move to more suitable offices with storage accommodation. He found it at 20 Bucklershury, right in the heart of the city and in the shadow of the Mansion House.

In those days, and later for that matter, Buchanan was fast becoming one of the best-known businessmen in London. Always a keen sportsman, he was also his own best publicity agent.

He was often seen driving around the city in a striking red-wheeled carriage drawn by a black pony, with a page seated behind him. Later he used a Victoria and a Brougham, drawn by a particularly fine grey mare, or at other times a blue roan, whose action and qualities were superb.

By 1887, with Queen Victoria fifty years on the throne, ‘Buchanan Blend’ was well into its stride. Eleven years later, Buchanan accepted a suggestion to go into the market for one of England’s most famous inns, the Black Swan Distillery at Holborn.

He bought the property for ?87,000 - and to quote his own words again, ‘had no idea’ where the money was coming from. He sorted it all Out within a week, however, and the firm moved into a headquarters which dated back to the reign of James I and was at one time the principal coaching inn in London.

From the Black Swan the famous

The Qawwali Expounded

The Qawwali Expounded

Lok Virsa (the National Iristitute of Folk and Traditional Heritage) has the mandate of collecting, documenting, archiving and projecting all aspects of our cultural traditions. Under the Research Report Programme, preliminary work done on various elements of traditional culture is made available to the reader as soon as possible in order to ensure that the research work done by Lok Virsa does not remain only archival, but also can reach a wider readership. The medium of qawwali to present the deep mystical ,philosophy of Sufi Islam is generally known, but very little has been written about it to date. In this report, Lok Virsa endeavours to give the reader a background to the origins and history of qawwali and the setting in the villages where it is performed. Among the performers, the focus is on a bearer of a great tradition of qawwali, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his group. Having had the honour of winning the President's Pride of Performance Medal, they are performing at the National Folk Music Festival of Pakistan 1988.

1 .1 Islamic Sources and Sama'

Qawwali as a musical form is closely linked to the sufic traditions of Islam and the particular practices that Sufi scholars developed to achieve closeness to God. Arab musicologists such as al-Kindi (d.873) and al-Farabi (b.872) wrote on the effects of music, but the first to take into account the relation between music and trance were the Brothers of Purity (lkhwan al-safa), "a group of philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, and litterateurs who flourished at AI-Sasra during the second half of the eleventh century"1 . lt remained for the great Muslim philosopher AI-Ghazali to unify the knowledge of his time. 1.1,1 AI-Ghazali and the lslamic Musical Tradition

Kitab adab al-sama:y wa al-wajd, the "Book of the Right Usages of Audition and Trance‘.' - such is the title given by AI-Ghazali (1085-111 1 ) to the eighth section of his famous Ihya u'lum al-din, "Book of the Revivifying of the Sciences of Faith." Written at the beginning of the twelfth century AD, this book is one of the most important treatises on Sufism.2 From this source and other contemporary writers, it is possible for us to reconstruct a description of a ceremony called sama'. Sama' is a concept difficult to translate, since it covers a range of meanings from audition to listening to the spiritual aspects of a musical concert rendered for that purpose.3 By the end of the eleventh century, a sama' was a spiritual concert in which the music was mainly sung, sometimes by a soloist, sometimes by a chorus, including instrumental elements of varying importance. The concert took place under the direction of a sheikh. The solo singing was provided by a cantor. The faithful listened to the music seated, in a state of inner contemplation, and allowed themselves to be gradually overcome by trance. Return to calm and normality was likewise brought about by the sound of music suitable for that purpose.

1 .2 The South Asian Context Qaul and Tarana

1 .2.1Sufism and the Developed Musical Tradition in South Asia- Amir Khusraw

Hazrat Amir Khusraw (1253-1325)4, a famous Sufi saint and an expert both in Indian and Persian music at the court of Ala' al-Din Khilji, Sultan of Delhi (12961316) is credited with the introduction of Persian and Arabic elements into South Asian music. Of particular importance are two musical forms: Tarana and Qaul, which is said to be the origin of Qawwali, a form of Muslim religious song. However, there is evidence that qawwali predates Hazrat Amir Khusraw: the great Sufi Masters of the Chishtiya and Suhrawardia Orders of South Asia were admirers of the qawwali and the Saint Hazrat Outubuddin Bakhtiar Kaki is said to have died in 1236 while in a musical trance induced by a qawwali

1 .3 The Vehicle and the Message

1 .3.1 The All-male Nature of Qawwali

From the early beginnings of Islam, the public sphere was an exclusively male domain. Women did participate in scholarship and even warfare in extraordinary conditions, but the realm of worship at best permitted of equal but separate action. Thus a musico-religious gathering contained only men and this tradition has survived to this day. The only notable exception are the more secularised forms of Qawwali, such as functions at female educational institutions or film scenes in contemporary Pakistan.

1 .3.2 A Strong Musical Vehicle for Ecstasy

The strength and power of Qawwali as a form is used to convey a mystic religious message. To draw and hold the attention of a heterogeneous audience is the skill that the best Qawwal (performers of qawwali) excel at. Thus altering the state of consciousness of the audience in order to make them more receptive to the content is one of the basic reasons for the existence of this vehicle.
